Exercising with Foot or Eye Problems
Some people with diabetes have foot or eye problems and certain safety steps are needed before doing any exercise. Here are some specific tips for staying safe:
The type of activity or sport you choose will depend on whether you have foot or eye problems. You may have poor sensation in your feet. Low impact activities that do not put pressure on your feet will be best for you. Proper footwear will prevent blisters and infection. If you have certain eye problems, lifting weights and high impact exercises will cause your blood pressure to rise. This could cause a retinal bleed. Here are some guidelines to follow:
If you have foot problems, make sure you:
- Wear shoes that fit well
- Use insole for more cushioning
- Wear soft socks
- Check your feet before and after exercise.
If you have no feeling in your feet or you have severe foot problems, try:
- Swimming
- Biking
- Rowing
- Chair exercises
- Arm exercises
If you have severe eye problems, avoid:
- Weight lifting
- Jogging
- High impact dance classes
- Racquet sports
